Abstract: This is Unit 1 of an eight-unit curriculum guide that the National Park Service has developed for teachers and students in 3rd through 8th grades, as part of the Parks as Classrooms Program initiated in 1993. This unit is designed to accompany visits to and study of the Cowpens National Battlefield in South Carolina. In this unit, students will describe characteristics of a national park, discuss some of the problems and critical issues facing national parks, and analyze acquired information to write a persuasive proposal for setting aside an area as a national park.  Students will explain the concept of national parks and their roles as defined by Congress. Students will differentiate between national parks and state parks. Students will create an imaginary park and design management and interpretive goals. Students will explain the relationship between cooperating associations and national parks and solve math problems related to cooperating association job descriptions. Students will construct a budget and explain priorities in spending. Finally, students will analyze problems and perform basic addition and subtraction as well as figure percentages.

Abstract: This is an online guidebook created for South Carolina history teachers, published in 2003 by Walter B. Edgar, Henry H. Lesense, the Institute for Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina, and the South Carolina Department of Education. Comprising of an introduction, 23 topical chapters, and a recommended reading bibliography, readers will find resources throughout the guide for teaching high school students about the history of South Carolina and of the United States. Teachers may use the guide to gain background information. The authors, Edgar and Lesesne, have created the guidebook to accompany two texts: South Carolina: a History by Walter B. Edgar and the 2003 state textbook, South Carolina: the History of an American State. The document uses these two texts as its central influence, as well as its topical and organizational guide. The introduction describes the organization of the guide and its contents; it also discusses rationale for the scope and treatment of history included. The guide covers a full range of South Carolina and United States history up through the modern period, but preferences a more extensive focus on history before 1877 and is arranged topically and chronologically. Chapter titles and topics come from South Carolina: a History. Each chapter is organized by primary topics and sub-topics within major time periods of South Carolina and United States history, and contains introductory material and key facts, such as important events and brief statistical information. Each chapter concludes with a summary and a suggested reading list. The guide concludes with a fuller bibliographic list of suggested readings.

From this activity, students will be able to identify a way people have changed habitats in the local area and identify a way people can help a habitat in the local area. Students will also be able to plan and conduct a project to help habitats in the local area.

Abstract: This unit plan comes from the South Carolina Aquarium’s Online Curriculum, and is designed for K-2 students to explore before a visit to the South Carolina Aquarium. In this unit, students will use maps and video to learn that each region in South Carolina has different habitats. The students will create dioramas to represent some of these habitats and then participate in role-playing games to learn why some species are found only in certain environments in South Carolina. From this unit, students will be able to explain that South Carolina contains many different environments and demonstrate that each of these environments has different features. Students will also be able to correctly place animals in the environment(s) which could serve as their habitat given the needs of common plants and animals.

Abstract: This unit plan comes from the South Carolina Aquarium’s Online Curriculum, and is designed for K-2 students to explore before a visit to the South Carolina Aquarium. In this unit, students will plant rice seeds and observe them over a period of two weeks to see how different factors (lack of light, lack of air, lack of nutrients (soil), lack of water and lack of space) affect their growth and development. Students will come to understand that plants need all of these things in their habitat to survive. Students will learn to observe what happens to plant growth when they do not receive air, water, sunlight, soil or space. From this unit, students will also be able to keep a journal of drawings and/or text showing scientific observation and demonstrate that plants need water, air, sunlight, soil and space in their habitats to survive.

StudySC Subjects:

Elementary-Environment and Geography-Physical Features

Suggested Grade Range: K-5

Time: 1-2 class periods

Abstract: This lesson comes from the South Carolina Aquarium’s Online Curriculum, and is designed for K-2 students to explore before a visit to the South Carolina Aquarium. In this lesson, the teacher will read the book The Salamander Room by Anne Mazer and discuss it with the students. The teacher will discuss with students some of the interesting characteristics of the spotted salamander and have them think about what they would need to do to ensure a salamander would survive if they were to keep one as a pet. The students will then discuss what they would need to do to keep a river otter, an American alligator or a bottle-nosed dolphin as a pet in the classroom. The students will create a mural on the wall to show how they would meet the habitat needs of the animal they have chosen. Students will learn to    explain that animals need air, food, water, shelter and space to survive. Students will also be able to create a representation of a habitat that meets the basic habitat needs of an American alligator, a bottlenose dolphin or a river otter.
